Study Title: Images of sex in the media



Introduction
You are invited to participate in a study concerning perceptions of pornography.



Why is this study being done?
The purpose of this study is to define pornography in terms of public perceptions. By understanding different aspects of sex in the media, researchers can what causes people to call something pornography. Discovering what those things are is the purpose of this study.




What are the study procedures? What will I be asked to do?
If you agree to take part in this study, you will be asked to read a series of scenarios and describe different elements each scenario by responding to a series of multiple-choice questions. The study will conclude by asking a few simple questions about yourself.



What other options are there?
If you choose not to participate in this study but still wish to receive extra credit, please speak with your instructor – many other research opportunities will be presented throughout the semester.



What are the risks or inconveniences of the study?
We believe there are no known risks associated with this research study; however, a possible inconvenience may be the time it takes to complete the study.



What are the benefits of the study?
You may not directly benefit from this research; however, we hope that your participation in the study may provide a social and legal definition for academics and professionals.



Will I receive payment for participation? Are there costs to participate?
There are no costs to participate. You may receive extra credit for a course. This amount has been stated on your course syllabus as determined by the Communication department.



How will my personal information be protected?
Your personal information is confidential and cannot be linked to you. Your name will be used for purpose of distributing extra credit only. Your personal information will not be stored with your responses.



You should also know that the UConn Institutional Review Board (IRB) and the Office of Research Compliance may inspect study records as part of its auditing program, but these reviews will only focus on the researchers and not on your responses or involvement. The IRB is a group of people who review research studies to protect the rights and welfare of research participants.



Can I stop being in the study and what are my rights?
You do not have to be in this study if you do not want to. If you agree to be in the study, but later change your mind, you may drop out at any time. There are no penalties or consequences of any kind if you decide that you do not want to participate.

Take as long as you like before you make a decision. We will be happy to answer any question you have about this study.
