Dear Sir or Madam:

On behalf of the South Dakota Cooperative Extension we request your cooperation in completing the attached survey. The survey is constructed to determine the best management practices utilized by South Dakota small acreage owners that have equine(s) on their property. The occurrence of small acreages in the Midwest has increased; therefore, their influence on the environmental quality of the region will have greater impact.

The collective contribution of acreages across the state of South Dakota leads to concern regarding topics such as water quality, invasive species and erosion. Many small acreage landowners may be unaware of the direct impact their management practices have on the environment. Currently, information regarding the management of these topics has been of limited availability to small-acreage owners.

The results of the survey will indicate the status of management practices used by South Dakota small acreage landowners. Participants will have the opportunity to have an on-site visit by SD Cooperative Extension personnel, who will provide education regarding soil and water testing, as well as information regarding best management practices, in an effort to improve the education of landowners and decrease the potential for negative impacts on the environment.

Your participation in this survey will be confidential. Results will be released as summaries of respective regions. This survey is voluntary, but we ask that you complete the survey in an effort to increase statewide environmental understanding. If you have questions regarding your rights as a survey participant, feel free to contact Dr. Norm Braaton via e-mail at [email protected] or by phone, (605) 688-6975.

If you have questions or comments regarding this survey, please feel free to contact representative Dr. Rebecca Bott via e-mail at [email protected] or phone, (605) 688-5412. Thank you for your time and cooperation.

Sincerely,

Rebecca Bott (SDSU Extension Equine Specialist), and the SDSU Small Acreage Team
