The Vocation and Mission of the Family in the Church and Contemporary World

February 23, 2015

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

The October 2014 Extraordinary Synod of Bishops addressed the vocation and mission of the family in the Church and world. At the conclusion of that meeting, Pope Francis released the summary of the Synod's work that would form the basis of this year's Ordinary General Assembly in October 2015. The Lineamenta can be found on the Vatican website by clicking here: Lineamenta – Vatican website. Along with the results of the Synod's deliberations, the document contains a series of questions regarding the preliminary work of the synod. In January of this year, Bishops in the United States were asked to consult their people about this preparatory work. This survey offers such an opportunity for Catholics in the Diocese of Yakima to participate in this consultation.

Pope Francis has emphasized that the results of the preliminary (Extraordinary) Synod are not decisions but are to form the basis for consultation and deliberations at the October 2015 meeting. Because this survey contains all 46 of the questions that are based on the Lineamenta, you are urged to read the document carefully before you respond to this survey. If you click on the above link, you will be able to go to that document. When you click on the "back" link (left-hand arrow at the top of the page) you will be returned to this survey. You may answer any or all of the questions. In your responses, as in the Synod deliberations, Pope Francis invites all of us to "Be courageous in faith and humbly and honestly to embrace the truth in charity."

Please note that the survey will become inactive on March 14, 2015, to allow time for the responses to be compiled and a report sent to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, and then on to the Vatican.

With my every best wish and blessing,

Most Rev. Joseph J. Tyson
Bishop of Yakima
