Section 2:

Please read the following paragraph before continuing with the survey. Do not amend any of your previous answer. Thank you.

Biometrics systems are automated methods of identifying a person based on a physiological or behavioral characteristic.

    Common examples:

    1 fingerprint scan

    2 palm scan

    3 iris scan

    4 facial features scan

    5 keystroke dynamics

    6 speech recognition

There is an increasing trend in the adoption of biometrics security systems in Singapore in everyday lives.
Biometrics systems have been proven to be very efficient, phasing out the conventional usage of keys and smart cards. Yet contrary to popular belief that it is the ‘prefect’ security system, several weaknesses have identified. It is in fact possible to forge and create a "fake finger" that will be accepted by some fingerprint scans and biometric scans is also not for everyone, ie. the blind are unable to perform iris scans. Perhaps the most crippling aspect of this system is that a person’s biometrics cannot be regenerated, thus, should someone successfully forges your biometric feature, he would gain full access to practically every system that is secured by it.

Section 3: Problems / Solutions

Security issues

1. State your level of willingness to accept a biometric security system in your home as an alternative to conventional security measures (e.g. locks and keys)?
Very willing Willing Neutral Not so willing Not willing at all

2. What factors would increase your willingness to adopt such a system? Rank in order of level of willingness(4 - most important factor and 1 - least important factor)
Cost
Convenience
Security
Privacy

3. With a biometric system in place, what additional measure would you be willing to accept to further enhance security? Choose only one.

Another Biometric Scan

Entering passwords

Carrying an ID card

Usage of a key or smartcard

4. State your willingness to sacrifice convenience over security?

I am not willing to sacrifice any amount of convenience, even if it means not having security.

I am willing to sacrifice a minimum amount of convenience, so long as a "security system" is present to deter criminals.

I am willing to sacrifice some level of convenience, for a decent level of security.

I am totally willing to sacrifice all convenience for maximum security

Privacy issues

1. Are you concerned about being constantly tracked by the government? i.e. Big brother kind of situation
Very concern Concern Neutral Not so concern Not concern at all

2. Are you concerned about your identity being stolen? i.e. Identity thefts, criminals stealing your personal information and going on shopping sprees.
Very concern Concern Neutral Not so concern Not concern at all

3. How much do you value your biometric data?
Very Value Value Neutral Not so Value Don't Value at all

4. Who should hold your biometric security data?

Government

Security companies

Private companies

Yourself

Health and personal issues

* 1. Which biometric system would you be most comfortable with? (6 - most comfortable and 1 - least comfortable)
Fingerprint scan
Palm scan
Iris scan
Keystroke dynamics
Facial features
Speech recognition

2. Do you have any health concerns? ( You may select more than one answer)

Prolong usage of iris scans would lead to blindness

Diseases can be transmitted through palm and fingerprint scans

Diseases can be transmitted through speaking into the same microphone as everyone

Others

No Health Concern

3. Do you have fears that the system could possibly reject your biometric reading and deny you access?

Yes

No
