Title: In a word: Victims’ Preferred terminology for the sexual violence perpetrated against them

This is a dissertation study designed to investigate the preferred terminology to describe types of violent crimes when used by various professionals such as mental health, medical, and law enforcement. Participants will be asked to complete the evaluation materials, which include demographics, a 17-item symptoms check list, and a 9-item terminology questionnaire.

It is possible participants may feel uncomfortable while participating in this study due to the sensitive content nature. If at any time a participant feels he or she does not wish to continue with the study, it is suggested that he or she discontinue the study immediately. There will be no consequence for not completing the questionnaires. Participation should take no more than 10-15 minutes. The primary benefit of this research study is to understand the factors that influence the language used to describe violent events. Your participation in this research study is completely voluntary. The researcher will be available to answer questions at any time and is available through e-mail correspondence. You are free to stop participating at any time and can withdraw from the study without penalty.

The information collected in relation to this investigation is kept strictly confidential. Test results are analyzed in a group format. Your test data will be used for research purposes only but may be shown to people outside of the dissertation committee. Your test results, however, will never be associated to you personally or to your name. Your name will not be identified in any future publication of this study.
