Special Membership Survey

At the last Executive Committee meeting, there were a few items that were discussed that we thought it would be best to get the opinion of the membership before taking any actions.

Club Facebook Page

The Executive Committee discussed making the NHTM’s Facebook page public.  Currently, the page is private.  In order to view and post on the site you need to be approved.  Currently, we approve any member, but not guests.  We also do not remove Facebook users when members drop out of the club.

By changing the Facebook page to public, the VP Public Relations would be able to better utilize Facebook to attract new members.  It would also allow the club and Toastmasters in general to gain more recognition.  It would also mean that if you were tagged in a picture from winning best speaker, it would show up on all your friends’ newsfeeds.  My understanding is there are ways to change your privacy setting, but I’m not sure.  Additionally, by having a public Facebook page, we would need to secure waivers from guests in order to use their photos on Facebook.

How would you prefer the NHTM utilize a Facebook page?

Progress Chart

Recently, progress chart depicting the progress of the club toward achieving the DCP goal of President’s Distinguished along with charts showing the progress of individual members toward the Communication Awards has been displayed before the meetings.   During the Executive Committee meeting, discussion revealed that while some members found the progress charts encouraging and motivational others thought it could be intimidating and inhibiting.

Voting for Best Speaker, Evaluator, Table Topics

Our club votes for best speaker, evaluator, and table topics speaker.  Not all clubs vote for these awards.  During the Executive Committee meeting there were various opinions regarding voting for these awards.  Opinions ranged from motivational, encouraging and a feeling to elation and acceptance when won for the first time to intimidating and inhibiting.  Some thought that voting runs counter to what Toastmasters teaches.  Toastmasters should be about improving yourself, not comparing yourself to others.

How do you feel about voting?
