Challenges and needs for more heat-stable vaccines.
- An assessment by VIPS - The Vaccine Innovation Prioritisation Strategy - a partnership between the Gavi Secretariat, World Health Organization (WHO), Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and PATH.

  • VIPS focuses on prioritising and accelerating new vaccine innovations, and in 2020 VIPS prioritised 3 vaccine innovations which included more heat-stable and controlled temperature chain (CTC) qualified vaccines. This was largely because challenges of managing temperature sensitive vaccines was mentioned as the top barrier to immunisation by country stakeholders.
  • More heat stable vaccines could ease the management challenges, but in the short-term, vaccines will not achieve full heat-stability that does not require cold-chain at all. With investment from manufacturers, incremental improvements may be feasible that ease some cold-chain challenges while not completely eliminating the need for cold-chain.
  • At this stage, it is important to understand if these incremental improvements are needed, if they will achieve programmatic impact and if yes, for which vaccines and situations these are needed the most.
